Sugar Rush? Why it Can Kill.

Do you know how much sugar you consume in a day? You’d be surprised to find some of the places the sweet stuff is hidden.

  • Preliminary research suggests sugary beverages are to blame for about 183,000 deaths worldwide each year, including 133,000 diabetes deaths, 44,000 heart disease deaths and 6,000 cancer deaths
  • Among the 35 largest countries in the world, Mexico had the highest death rates associated with sugary beverage consumption. The US ranked third, with an estimated 25,000 annual deaths from sweetened drinks
  • Fructose has been identified as one of the primary culprits in the rise of obesity and related health problems, and while the majority of the problem is caused by the large quantities of high fructose corn syrup added to so many processed foods and sweetened beverages, naturally-occurring fructose in large amounts of fruit juice is also a problem
  • Coca-Cola recently released its latest enhanced water product called “Fruitwater.” Despite its name, the product does NOT contain any juice. Rather it’s sweetened with the artificial sweetener sucralose and synthetic chemical “natural fruit flavors”
  • Your most cost effective ideal beverage is plain filtered tap water. If you want a carbonated beverage, try sparkling mineral water with a squirt of lime or lemon juice

MEDIA RELEASE: FEB 2013

Debut album No Surprise by Phil Stoodley - out now

Picture

As fate had it this musician was given his first guitar at age fifteen after his dad ‘got lucky’ at the horses. By seventeen he was bashing out tunes in a heavy metal rock band and making a name for himself at pubs and festivals throughout the lower North Island of New Zealand.

Phil Stoodley then went on to spend the best part of his youth dedicating himself to working as a musician<em “mso-bidi-font-style:=”” normal”=”” style=”position: relative; “> ‘A Long Way From Home’, travelling across New Zealand in various cover bands.

Come the early 2000s Phil was touring the UK, Europe, US and Asia as a session player for one of New Zealand’s best loved and multi platinum selling band’s The Feelers.

A number of other successful musical ventures followed; Phil brought together and fronted the rock band STOODS, winners of the New Zealand Battle of the Bands, which also found him scooping up the “Best Songwriter” and “Best Singer” awards. Phil’s various musical projects went on to support a number of leading international bands such as Velvet Revolver, Simple Minds and Neil Finn.

In recent times this dynamic artist has been writing, recording and producing from his own home studio both his own original songs along with those of emerging Kiwi artist, Hanna Grace. 2012 saw Phil co-write, produce and feature in a duet with Hanna Grace called <em “mso-bidi-font-style:=”” normal”=”” style=”position: relative; “>In The Rain. Phil has also written a number of melodies for TV, film and commercials.

Early 2010 brought Phil more recognition with the release of his first solo singleWaiting For Thursday. Co-written with acclaimed New Zealand actor Leighton Cardno, the track entered into the New Zealand RadioScope 100 official music charts.

From mid 2012 until now Phil has been touring around South East Asia, performing, writing, and adding weight to his already heavy pack of experience.

The first fully-fledged debut solo album from Phil, ‘No Surprise’ is a gentle midday mix, easy on the ears, void of pretention yet brimming with meaning. An album for those long, country drives, those relaxing Sunday afternoons. From the French twist Falling Apart to Stormy Weather ‘s coaxing pop, Phil takes us all on a personal journey.

A stand out gem, the track <em “mso-bidi-font-style:=”” normal”=”” style=”position: relative; “>Walk Forward In Motion, displays Phil’s production skills with a funky and addictive blend of electro and pop, cleverly illustrated in a quirky and romantic steam-punk style music video by award winning Russian director Andrey Shushkov.

Ironically, the album is surprisingly diverse; a mixed array of tracks from an artist who has successfully made a progression from his rock origins to the contemporary and quintessential sounds that is PHIL STOODLEY, ‘<em “mso-bidi-font-style:=”” normal”=”” style=”position: relative; “>NO SURPRISE.

Arugula & Scallops Salad

Ingredients

5 oz. Arugula

4 oz. Bean Sprouts

(Drizzle) Basil Olive Oil

Balsamic Vinegar

1-1½ cups Dried Cranberries

1½ lbs Sea Scallops

One Wedge Fresh Shaved Parmigiano Reggiano

Directions:

Rinse the arugula and bean sprouts before combining all the ingredients. In a large bowl mix together the arugula, bean sprouts, dried cranberries, shaved Parmigiano. Drizzle the basil olive oil and put in a “good portion” (says my dad) of balsamic vinegar.

In a medium pan, soak the scallops in white wine for about 30 minutes in a tin-cooking container. Afterwards drain them. Put the broiler on high and broil the scallops until they are lightly browned. Top the salad with the scallops and enjoy! This recipe is delicious and so easy!

TAN IN A CAN 101

These fail-safe sunless tanning products want you to stay golden, Ponyboy.

by: Jamie deGraaf

Oompa loompa doompadee doo. I almost joined in the singing of my ninth grade music appreciation class until I looked around a realized everyone was looking at me…and my radiant melon complexion. That night I scoured my body with lemon juice and swore off spray tans.

That was 2007. Since then, sun tan alternatives, as well as my relationship with them, have come a long way. No, I haven’t had the nerve to get another spray tan, but as a freckled fair-skinner in a lifelong pursuit of keeping up with my bronzed friends, I have done my share of dabbling with the tan in a can.

If you’re headed down the sunless tanning road for the first time, hooray for you—just say no to scary UV. But it can be daunting to know what is what amid all of the product options; I’ve had my share of beach days with streaky legs and dates with orange palms. Here’s a list of my favorite products to aid in navigating the sun-free glow; take it from a self-proclaimed pale girl.

Tricks of the Trade

• Prime application time for a sunless tanning product is post-shower when skin is clean and exfoliated. Using a non-oil based exfoliant will slough off the dead skin and ensure a natural even color—avoid oil-bases.

• Thoroughly moisturize your skin before applying. If your skin is dry, it will drink up the sunless tanning product and will result in uneven color.

• When it comes to lotions and foams, rub the product on in a circular motion to avoid streaking. Use a light hand when it comes to knuckles, elbows, knees, ankles and in between fingers and toes—these dry areas will absorb quickly and leave you with orange joints.

• Keep things natural—apply more product to the top of the arms and less to the underside to mimic a real life sun tan.

• Yes, the product will stain everywhere you don’t want it to. Wash your hands immediately after, because no matter what Yahoo Answers says, lemon juice doesn’t cut the mustard. Pay special attention to around finger nails.

• After application, hang out in the buff for a few, maximizing dry time so as to not smear the product or stain your clothing.

• Steer clear of showering or swimming or getting caught in a rain storm for a least three hours post-application to avoid a dripping tan.

LOTION

Jergens Natural Glow Express Body Moisturizer: $8, Target, Meijer, CVS

This lotion achieves best results when applied gradually over the course of three days, but will still do the job for a one time quick application. It’s composed of a blend of skin tone-specific color enhancers: dihydroxyacetone (DHA) and erythrulose which deepen skin color through chemical reactions. It also contains anti-oxidants and moisturizing ingredients such as glycerin, petrolatum and mineral oil.

FOAM

Jergens Natural Glow Foaming Daily Moisturizer: $9: Target, Meijer, CVS

This daily moisturizer is for those looking for a subtle constant glow. The non-greasy foam dries in seconds so there is no need to lock yourself in the bathroom and find things to pick and pluck while it absorbs. The skin-darkening formula develops a natural even color—just make sure to shake the bottle well before use.

MIST

Neutrogena MicroMist Airbrush Sunless Tan: $11, Meijer, Target, CVS

The airbrush spray is great for those not trying to get their hands dirty. The mist covers evenly when held about six inches from the body and keeping the can in constant motion. Ideally, this is a no-rub application process, but you may find you have to even out areas at the end of your strokes by hand. The product is oil free, won’t clog your pores and dries in less than five minutes.

GEL

Kardashian Glamour Tan: $34, Sephora

If Kim Kardashian gets her flawless russet glow from this bottle, I figured I try it too. The gel is non-streaking, non-staining and results are noticeable after 24 hours. The formula contains antioxidants and vitamins C, D and E. It’s the only self-tanner containing imudulin, an ingredient that stimulates vitamin D synthesis to lessen the appearance of those crow’s feet you may have acquired before switching from fake n’ baking.
